As in all our editions, the area around Plaza Gipuzkoa in Donostia – San Sebastián will be the starting and finishing point of the seventh edition of the San Sebastian Circuit Spirit Rally.
On our journey to the French Basque Country, Bera will become an enclave of vital importance, since through Ibardin we will enter Lapurdi.
Bera is a town full of living wealth, cradle of great world-famous artists throughout history and mother of a culture who still preserve his roots today. Among its dazzling alleys and its enchanted nature, we find fundamental pieces of a shared history, buildings that reflect the life and feelings of hundreds of generations.
Starting from the Town Hall Square we find the Church of San Esteban, originally it was a Gothic tower house that over the years would become a church. Inside the church we find the main neoclassical altarpiece dating from the 19th century in which we admire an image of San Esteban. One of the pieces that stands out the most is the organ, which is considered the best romantic organ in Navarra.
The Town Hall is located in the same square, built in 1776 in a neoclassical style. The house near the town hall is Larunbe, built in 1796 and known for hosting Jose Bonaparte when he was heading to France after escaping from the Battle of Vitoria in 1813; although later it will also serve as accommodation for Duke Wellington.
One of the town's greatest attractions is Itzea, the house where the Baroja family settled in 1912. From this moment on, the vast majority of the Barojas' work was developed in this house, being a muse and source of inspiration for Carmen, Pio, Ricardo, Julio Caro and Pio Caro Baroja, living reflection of the family's literary and pictorial production.
On the outskirts of the town, adjacent to Lesaka, we find the San Miguel Bridge; where on September 1, 1813, during the war of independence a tedious battle took place between French and English troops.
Finally, comment on the importance of Ibardin, the border with Lapurdi that has been and is a fundamental part of the town. It is a commercial center where visitors can find everything from food to clothing, souvenirs and restaurants.
Bera is much more than its monuments, it is also its nature, its friendliness, its gastronomy and its people. Therefore, we invite you to discover it with us.
After a stop to discover some of the gastronomic riches of the town, and as we said paragraphs above, we will enter Lapurdi through the Ibardin col, and once we have overcome it, we will enter French territory and reach the charming town of Ascain. From there, the caravan of vehicles will go to the top of St. Ignace where we will find the famous cogwheel train from 1924 that brings tourists and visitors to the top of Mount Larrun (905m) in 35 minutes.
The panoramic view offers us a clear view of the surrounding territories of Lower Navarra, Navarra and Gipúzcoa, the Basque Coast on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, from San Sebastián to the mouth of the Adour, even reaching the Landes already in the Atlantic.
The next town we find is Sare, from which we will begin a loop that will take us to Ainhoa and back in Sare we will head towards the Lizuniaga peak where we will enter Navarra again. Bera is waiting for us.
After regaining our strength in the town of Bera, we will begin the return to Donostia – San Sebastián, passing through the neighborhood of Arkale and Gurutze and towns such as Oiartzun, Astigarraga, Hernani, arriving as usual at the town of Lasarte-Oria, the nerve center of the old motor racing circuit of San Sebastián.
In 2024, Michelin, main sponsor of the San Sebastian Circuit Spirit, is celebrating the 90th anniversary of the establishment of its factory in said Gipuzkoan town. Just a few days after the official closing of its horse racing season, the San Sebastián Hippodrome hosts the rally caravan for the second consecutive year.
Once the stop has been made, we will head towards Donostia – San Sebastián where we will finish this year's rally route. As always, a large audience will be waiting for the arrival of all these jewels on wheels.
